It’s Mother’s Day in the UK. The Virgin Mary a It’s Mother’s Day in the UK. The Virgin Mary and child (known as Pazzi Madonna) by Donatello is a famous shallow-relief carving (schiacciato) showing Mary not as a holy person, but rather as a loving mother. In response baby Jesus is smiling. This was a very unusual intimate way of depicting the Virgin Mary in the early 1400s and became a much copied pose by sculptors during the Renaissance. The second picture of the seated Virgin and child shows a more a more melancholic looking mother anticipating the tragic fate of her baby boy, who looks equally sad and earnest. This is a pose that was favoured by earlier sculptors. The terracotta figure is possibly by Donatello.
Check it out for yourself at the excellent V & A exhibition in London ‘Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance’ (closes 11 June 2023) #victoriaandalbertmuseum #donatello #renaissancesculpture #londonart #mothersday #virginmary #mothermary #babyjesus
Yes, it’s a Triceratops Prorsus skull and it is Yes, it’s a Triceratops Prorsus skull and it is at least 66 million years old. So, from the Maastrichtian, Late Cretaceous Period (I knew you knew that). This is the ultimate piece of art you want to own. That’s why this fearsome, near-complete three-horned skull is for sale at David Aaron - minus the charming young lady modelling it, I hasten to add. Aaron, the London based dealer specialising in ancient art is one more day at #masterpieceartfair in London. Always well worth a visit if you’re in town around the first week of July. This #dinosaur was found at #lancecreekformation So next time you’re in #wyoming, bring a shovel. This is where many #maastricht -ian fossils are found. Wagner’s view towards Vierwaldstättersee at Tri Wagner’s view towards Vierwaldstättersee at Tribschen in Lucerne. Richard and Cosima Wagner and their children spent six years (1866-‘72) in this idyllic setting. Richard finished the Meistersinger score and composed the Siegfried Idyll (originally called the Tribschen Idyll), as well as the operas Siegfried and Götterdämmerung here. This is a place to visit for the fantastic atmosphere and to appreciate how important nature is in Wagner’s works. And then there is the composer’s original Erard, today again playable. OK, I’m a Wagner tragic, but please feel free to join the club after you’ve seen this place. Just don’t read Wagner’s pamphlets, essays and rantings. Turin is worth a visit, even without all that Euro Turin is worth a visit, even without all that Eurovision malarkey. The strangely shaped cupola in the distance has been restored after a fire that could have destroyed the 12th century Holy Shroud with its mysterious image of Christ. You also see the Duomo and its bell tower and the brick tower is the Roman Porta Palatina. The second picture shows the fantastic, less holy collection of arms and armoury in the Armeria Reale. You can still purchase Dürer’s works fo a small price (small, should you be a professional footballer). Head over to Agnews Gallery to see (buy?) The Virgin and Child with a flower on a grassy bench (1503). Benches in Bethlehem were famously not well maintained in them days. I think our Mary is resting on the flight into Egypt. I’ll probably slip off through the rungs into the arms of the demons below. This northeastern part of the country is particularly worthwhile for its churches with lively biblical depictions on the outside. This is the Humor monastery outside Gura Humorului.

Apparently this is a sitting tiger. I think this i Apparently this is a sitting tiger. I think this impressive bronze mortar looks more like the incredibly aggressive American Bulldog with his equally bellicose owner that I met this morning on the Kennet & Avon canal tow path. I told the owner in no uncertain terms to control his threatening dog. The pugnacious dog owner promised to come back and beat me up after he’d taken his barking mad dog home. I didn’t see him again. I’m secretly wishing that the attack dog mauled his unpleasant master upon their return home. This 10-inch bronze mortar was found in an Indian fort in Karnal in 1838. It was meant to be fired at the colonising Brits but remained unfinished. It can be found in Fort Nelson’s impressive Royal Armouries museum. It is home to the national collection of artillery. #fortnelson #artillery #bronzeart #mortar #royalarmouries #Hampshire #tigerart #killerdog #fareham

Just a few doodles made in the early 60s, but today worth tens of thousands of dollars. A large elongated sculpture (Grande Femme I) by Albert Giacometti sold recently for more than $90 million.
This magazine and Quatre figurines sur piedestal (next picture) could until recently be seen in Moderna Museet’s exhibition Face to Face. In the next picture have a look at Judith with her sword slung over her shoulder after beheading Holofernes (whose head is displayed in the basket). Only Artemisia Genteleschi could have painted these scenes with such female conviction. The exhibition Artemisia is a must-see at the National Gallery.
